| Poker Players - Erik Seidel |
 |
Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel is a true New Yorker. Born on the island of Manhattan, he grew up in the city and eventually worked on Wall Street as a trader for Paine-Webber. For several years he played the game of backgammon and was known as a world class player traveling all over the world to participate in the most important matches. His interest in poker came in the mid 1980s when he began to play at Manhattan’s prestigious Mayfair Club.
Known as a great tournament player, Erik has six World Series of Poker bracelets to his credit, and is known for his unpredictable play – sometimes described as too tight, and other times coming off like a maniac. Needless to say, it’s very hard to keep track of the poker odds, when you’re playing against Erik Seidel. He enjoys the attention and feels his strategy has played well if no one can truly get a read.
In 1988, Seidel sat across from Johnny Chan in the WSOP championship, face to face, for all of the marbles. The archival footage of this event is used in the film Rounders, in which they analyze the game and watch the disappointment of Seidel as Johnny Chan checks for the entire game and leads Seidel to go all in on a pair of Queens. Chan had drawn the nut-straight, and that was that.
Regardless of finishing runner-up in 1988, Seidel has been in the winning game ever since then. Stringing his WSOP play across a decade, and being named Best All-Around Tournament Player by the Phil Hellmuth Website for 2002-2003, Erik Seidel is now a member of Team Full Tilt Poker, where you can find him at fulltiltpoker.com. He is not as well known as so many of the names today, but you can’t argue with results. You can quickly find him in the top ten of all-time tournament winnings and also the top ten list at the Bellagio. Erik and his wife now live in Las Vegas, NV, and you can track his progress and event schedule at erikseidel.com.
