Poker Players - Allen Cunningham

Allen Cunningham

In the current era of flashy young poker players, bursting with bravado and desperate to prove to the world that no one can challenge them, a player like Allen Cunningham can easily be lost in the shuffle. Allen’s quiet, reserved nature seems counter to the typical aggressive attitude many of today’s players tend to exude. However, Allen’s results have shown that it would be a big mistake to underestimate this young poker star.

Born in 1977, Allen grew up in Riverside, California, and eventually attended UCLA, where he studied civil engineering. Allen discovered poker quite innocently, picking it up on trips to Indian Casinos with friends at the age of 18. Allen was pleasantly surprised to discover he had quite an aptitude for the game of poker, and was soon inspired to join the ranks of professional players.

Allen’s tournament results have confirmed that he made the right choice. He began modestly, placing 25th in the $2000 Pot Limit Hold`em event at the 1998 World Series of Poker, and winning the $100 Limit Hold`em event at the 1998 National Championship of Poker in California. After multiple cashes in 1999 and 2000, yielding thousands of dollars in tournament winnings, not to mention the title of Best All Around Player at the Bicycle Casino’s Legends of Poker in 1999, Allen had a big year in 2001. That year, he won the $500 Pot Limit event of the L.A. Poker Classic, made the final table of the World Poker Open, made three World Series of Poker final tables, including winning a bracelet for Seven Card Stud, and made the final three tables of the World Series of Poker Championship. The years to follow would prove that his performance in 2001 was no fluke. In 2002, Allen made two more World Series final tables and won his second bracelet, for Deuce to Seven Draw Lowball. In 2003 he came in third in the World Poker Tour’s Euro Finals of Poker, and 13th in the World Poker Tour Championship. He also made two more World Series of Poker final tables and won the $1000 No Limit event of the United States Poker Championship. In 2004 he achieved real fame when he won the World Poker Tour World Poker Classic Championship. In 2005 Allen added another World Series of Poker bracelet to his collection, beating out over 2300 players to win the inaugural event, $1500 No Limit Hold`em. This win gave Allen the rare distinction of owning a World Series of Poker bracelet in three different forms of poker, making him a true all-around great poker player.

Allen is affiliated with fulltiltpoker.net, where you can download software to play real poker on the Internet with players all over the world, including Allen. Allen feels that online play has been critical in sharpening his game. And his game is indeed sharp. He may not be as flashy as some of the players on the poker tour, but you can be sure he can hold his own with any one of them.
